This printable PDF plan guides you through building our minimalist daybed, inspired by Donald Judd’s iconic design but with a lighter, more open feel. The step-by-step instructions offer construction and material options for both novice builders with basic tools and more experienced craftsmen with advanced equipment.

SIZE: Designed to fit a traditional Japanese shikibuton floor mattress, sized 31 inches deep, 77 inches long, and 33 inches tall, but adaptable for any cushions of your choice.

COST: $400 USD. Material choices and local pricing will vary the total build cost.

SKETCHUP: An entry-level 3D design program that allows you to take precise measurements and examine the hidden layers of construction details. Use it to modify the design, or to familiarize yourself with the construction process digitally before building for real. Sketchup is available as an always-free web app, so there is no added cost.
